is the online home for writer and Rhode Island storyteller Joe Theroux. Joe is known for his character-driven performances of tales from folklore, his personal experiences, and the murky depths of his imagination. He is also the author of The Red Spaces.
Joe has been performing at libraries, schools and festivals across southern New England since 1997. He currently resides in North Kingstown, RI with his wife Deborah, daughters Margot and Talia, and cats Sophie and Clive.
The Red Spaces is a book that had been marinating in my skull for over twenty years. Now it’s available for purchase as of my 42nd birthday. Strange.
I first clicked save on The Ballad of Ariana Isabella and the South County Shooter in the winter of 2004/2005, somewhere in those cold months between watching the Red Sox break “The Curse” and first kissing my future wife. A few friends read it. They convinced me to change the title.
After so many years of ignored query letters and minor revisions, this year I decided to self-publish. Not for myself, mind you, but for the characters. I’m very fond of Ariana and Horace and I feel like I owe it to them.
I’m not out there pounding the pavement and blowing up Twitter to sell mad copies and get that cash. I am not that guy and this is not that book. It is not a ground-breaking new masterwork from an exciting new author. It is just my little story about stories, a signpost and a souvenir from another time. If you read it, I hope you enjoy it.
